The Luxury Travel Agent’s Complete Guide to North Vietnam

Jem Travel is a licensed boutique DMC based in Hanoi (International Tour Operator Licence No. 01-2615/2024/CDLQGVN-GP LHQT), and North Vietnam is the region we know best. This guide is written for agents who sell high-end, private travel: it shows how we build a luxury North Vietnam itinerary, which partner hotels we actually use, which experiences are worth the upgrade, and what your clients will still be talking about months after they fly home.

Our founder, Nguyen Nhu Ngoc (“Gemma”), spent ten years designing Indochina programmes for European tour operators before founding Jem Travel in 2024. Everything below comes from that ground-level experience, not from a brochure.

What “luxury” means in North Vietnam (and what it doesn’t)

In the North, luxury is rarely about marble lobbies. It is about privacy, timing and pace: a cruise cabin with a balcony facing the karsts at first light, a private car waiting when the train from the mountains arrives, a guide who knows when to stop talking. For Jem Travel, a luxury itinerary has three non-negotiables:

Fewer stops, longer stays. We plan two meaningful experiences per day, never five. Clients who are rushed through Hanoi, Ha Long, Ninh Binh and Sapa in six days come home tired, not impressed.

Character over size. Where a boutique property beats an international chain on atmosphere and service, we choose the boutique property.

Everything private. Private car and driver, private guide, private or small-ship cruise options, and a 24/7 Jem Travel contact in Hanoi throughout the trip. If weather or energy levels change the plan, we change the plan with it.

A 10-day luxury North Vietnam itinerary your clients can buy

This is the backbone we adapt most often for couples and small private groups. Every day can be moved, shortened or extended.

Days 1–3: Hanoi, slowly

Arrival with Fast Track service at Noi Bai airport, so clients skip the immigration queue after a long-haul flight. Two full days in Hanoi rather than one: a morning on foot in the Old Quarter, a cyclo ride at the hour when the streets are still waking up, and the Hanoi Coffee Culture tour (egg coffee in a hidden upstairs café, filter coffee on a low plastic stool). For clients interested in history, the Hoa Lo Prison Night Tour offers a far more atmospheric visit than a daytime walk-through. Dinner on night two: a private street-food evening with a guide who orders for the table.

Days 4–5: Ha Long Bay by seaplane and private-balcony cruise

Ha Long Bay is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and the way clients first see it matters. Instead of the standard road transfer, clients can arrive over the bay itself on a private seaplane flight (30 minutes or one hour). Seeing the limestone karsts from the air before boarding is the single most effective “wow” upgrade we sell in the North. One night on board a 5-star cruise such as Regina Grand Cruise or Scarlet Cruise, with kayaking in quieter coves and sunrise from the cabin balcony. For honeymooners or clients who value total privacy, we also arrange private cruise charters.

Days 6–7: Ninh Binh, the inland bay

Two nights at Emerald Tam Coc Resort or Tam Coc Garden, both set among rice fields and karst. Clients are rowed through the caves of Tam Coc or the Trang An Landscape Complex, also UNESCO-listed, in a small sampan, then have unhurried time: a bicycle ride through the paddies, a long lunch, an early night. Ninh Binh is where clients finally feel the trip slow down, and we protect that rhythm deliberately.

Days 8–10: Sapa and the northern mountains

Private transfer into the mountains and three nights at Silk Path Sapa or Jade Hill. Guided walks through terraced valleys and Hmong and Dao villages, paced to the client’s fitness rather than a fixed route, and a home-hosted lunch with a local family. Clients then return to Hanoi for their international departure, or continue to Central Vietnam, Cambodia or Laos with us.

Agent tip: if your clients have only 7 nights, build a shorter luxury North Vietnam itinerary by cutting a destination rather than compressing all four. Hanoi + Ha Long + Ninh Binh at an easy pace sells better than four rushed stops.

Where to stay on a luxury North Vietnam itinerary: Jem Travel partner hotels

These are properties we book and inspect regularly. Indicative ranges below are per room (or cabin) per night, vary by season and room category, and are shared to help you position the trip with your clients. Net rates are provided on request.

Destination 5-star partners (approx. USD 120–300) Boutique 4-star alternatives (approx. USD 75–110)
Hanoi Apricot Hotel, Oriental Jade, Peridot Grand Hanoi Authentic, Imperial Hotel
Ha Long Bay (cruise) Regina Grand Cruise, Scarlet Cruise Regina Legend Cruise, Sena Cruise
Ninh Binh Emerald Tam Coc Resort, Tam Coc Garden Lalita Resort, Ninh Binh Legend
Sapa Silk Path Sapa, Jade Hill Bamboo Sapa, BB Sapa

For clients who prefer character over facilities, we also place guests at Jardin de Tam Coc in Ninh Binh or at a mountain ecolodge such as Laxsik Ecolodge in Sapa, often for one night within a 5-star itinerary. It is a deliberate contrast that clients tend to remember fondly.

Signature experiences worth adding to a luxury North Vietnam itinerary

Private seaplane over Ha Long Bay. The highest-impact add-on in the North, available as a 30-minute or one-hour flight. Best sold to couples and milestone trips.

Fast Track at Noi Bai airport. Low cost, high relief. We recommend including it by default for long-haul arrivals.

Private dining in Hanoi. A gourmet dinner in a private venue, or the opposite: a guided street-food evening where clients eat bun cha and fresh spring rolls exactly where Hanoians do. Both are luxury, in different ways.

Hoa Lo Prison Night Tour. For history-minded clients, a quieter and more moving visit than the daytime crowds allow.

Home-hosted lunch in Sapa. Not a show, not a restaurant. A meal in a family home, arranged with care and paid fairly.

When to sell a luxury North Vietnam itinerary: an honest season guide

October to early December is our favourite window: clear skies over Ha Long, comfortable walking in Sapa, and harvest-gold terraces in the early part of the season.

December to February is cool to cold. Hanoi can be grey and damp, and Sapa can be genuinely cold and misty. Beautiful and atmospheric, but warm layers are essential and clients should expect fog to hide some views.

March to April brings milder temperatures and fresh green landscapes, though light haze is common on the bay.

May to September is hot and humid, with heavy summer showers. Ha Long cruises can be suspended by the authorities when storms approach, especially from July to September. We always build a fallback plan into summer programmes and tell clients about it before they travel, not after.

Extending south: Hoi An and the basket boats

Many luxury clients pair the North with Central Vietnam. A short domestic flight from Hanoi to Da Nang leads to Hoi An, where we place guests at La Siesta, Bel Marina or Royal Hoi An. The most requested experience there is a basket boat ride through the coconut-palm waterways near Hoi An, followed by a cooking class at Tra Que Village. Three nights in Hoi An turns a 10-day northern trip into a complete two-week Vietnam journey without the exhausting north-to-south marathon.

What your clients will actually remember

Ask our returning travellers about their trip and they rarely start with the hotel thread count. They tell stories like these:

The silence of the bay at six in the morning, coffee in hand on the balcony, before any other boat is moving.

The moment the seaplane banked and the karsts suddenly appeared below, hundreds of them, much closer than they expected.

The woman in Tam Coc who rowed their sampan with her feet and laughed when they tried to copy her.

The grandmother in a Sapa village who refilled their rice bowl three times and would not take no for an answer.

The egg coffee they still try, and fail, to recreate at home.

The guide who noticed they were tired on day six and quietly moved the afternoon visit to the next morning.

None of these moments appear on a standard itinerary, and almost all of them depend on pace, privacy and people. That is what we design for, and it is what your clients will repeat to their friends when they recommend your agency.

How Jem Travel works with your agency

You keep the client relationship; Jem Travel handles everything on the ground. Every proposal is tailor-made from your client’s brief, usually within 24–48 hours. During the trip, our Hanoi team, led by Operations Manager Hoang Thi Vinh, is reachable 24/7, and itineraries can be adjusted in real time. After the trip, we send you a feedback report so you know exactly how your clients experienced Vietnam. Italian-speaking agents can work with us entirely in Italian, including through our Italy-based representative, Simone Vallone.

Frequently asked questions

How many days do clients need for a luxury North Vietnam itinerary?

Jem Travel recommends 9 to 10 days to cover Hanoi, Ha Long Bay, Ninh Binh and Sapa at a relaxed pace. With 7 days, we suggest Hanoi, Ha Long Bay and Ninh Binh only, rather than compressing all four destinations.

Which 5-star hotels does Jem Travel use on a luxury North Vietnam itinerary?

Our regular 5-star partners include Apricot, Oriental Jade and Peridot Grand in Hanoi; Regina Grand Cruise and Scarlet Cruise in Ha Long Bay; Emerald Tam Coc Resort and Tam Coc Garden in Ninh Binh; and Silk Path and Jade Hill in Sapa. Indicative rates range from about USD 120 to 300 per room per night depending on season.

Can Jem Travel arrange a private seaplane over Ha Long Bay?

Yes. Jem Travel arranges private seaplane flights over Ha Long Bay of 30 minutes or one hour, which can replace the road transfer from Hanoi or be added as a standalone experience. Availability depends on weather and season.
