At Jem Travel, Hoi An boutique luxury travel means one thing: giving your clients time. Time to watch the Thu Bon River change colour at dusk, to cook with a farming family in Tra Que, to sit through a full performance of Hue court music without glancing at a watch. As a licensed boutique DMC based in Hanoi (International Tour Operator Licence No. 01-2615/2024/CDLQGVN-GP LHQT), we design Central Vietnam for agencies whose travellers want to live a place, not tick it off.
This guide is written for travel agents and tour operators. It covers how we pace Hoi An, Hue and the coast between them, which partner hotels we use at each level, the experiences that sell themselves, and indicative price ranges so you can position the product before you even ask us for a quote.
Why Central Vietnam is built for slow travel
Central Vietnam rewards travellers who stay longer in fewer places. Three UNESCO World Heritage sites — Hoi An Ancient Town, the Complex of Hue Monuments and My Son Sanctuary — sit within a few hours’ drive of each other, connected by the coast road and the Hai Van Pass. Da Nang airport is the natural gateway, with direct domestic flights from Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.
That compact geography is exactly why we refuse to rush it. The standard mass-market pattern is “Hoi An in a day, Hue in a day.” Ours is closer to four nights in Hoi An and two to three nights in Hue, with at least one afternoon in each place deliberately left empty. Agents who have sold our Central Vietnam itineraries tell us the empty afternoon is often what clients mention first when they come home.
How Jem Travel paces a Hoi An boutique luxury travel itinerary
Our rule across Indochina is simple: two meaningful experiences done well beat five rushed ones. In practice, a typical Hoi An day looks like this:
- Early morning: the Ancient Town before the day visitors arrive — the Japanese Covered Bridge, merchant houses and the riverside market at their quietest, with a guide who tells stories rather than reads dates.
- Late morning: one hands-on experience — a cooking class, a lantern workshop or a cycle through the rice fields.
- Afternoon: free. Pool, tailor fittings, a nap, a café. We recommend options; we don’t schedule them.
- Evening: the lanterns. Dinner at a local restaurant we know well, or a private table by the river.
Because every Jem Travel itinerary is tailor-made, this rhythm flexes. Honeymooners may want more free time; a photography group may want two dawn sessions. Our team can also adjust the programme during the trip if weather or energy levels change — one of the reasons agents trust us with their most demanding clients.
Where your clients stay: our Hoi An and Hue hotel partners
We choose properties for character and service, not size. Below are the partners we work with most in Central Vietnam, with indicative room rates per night. Final rates depend on season, room category and dates, and are confirmed in your proposal.
| Level |
Hoi An |
Hue |
Indicative rate / room / night |
| 5-star |
La Siesta, Bel Marina, Royal Hoi An |
Pilgrimage Village, Imperial Hotel, Melia Vinpearl |
approx. USD 120–300 |
| 4-star boutique |
Shining Riverside, Emerald Riverside |
White Lotus, Spatel d’Annam |
approx. USD 75–110 |
| 3-star with character |
Royal Riverside, Thuy Duong 3, Hoi An Central |
Le Clos du Fil |
approx. USD 50–70 |
| Homestay & ecolodge |
Charming Homestay, An Bang Beach Homestay |
Hue Ecolodge |
on request |
A combination we often recommend: three nights at La Siesta in town, then one night at An Bang Beach Homestay for a softer, quieter close to the Hoi An stay. In Hue, Pilgrimage Village works well for travellers who want garden space after a day at the Citadel; Le Clos du Fil suits couples who prefer a small, personal property.
Experiences in Hoi An that sell themselves
Basket boat through the Cam Thanh water coconut forest
Just outside Hoi An, round bamboo basket boats move through narrow channels lined with water coconut palms. We run it in the early morning or late afternoon, when the light is soft and the waterways are calm, and pair it with a short visit to the fishing families who still use the boats for work.
Cooking class at Tra Que Village
Tra Que is a vegetable and herb village between Hoi An and the sea. Clients walk the gardens with the farmers, help water and pick the herbs, then cook with them — banh xeo, fresh spring rolls, Quang noodles. It is our most requested Hoi An experience among agents selling to food-focused clients.
Lantern-making workshop
A two-hour session with a local artisan, building a silk lantern on a bamboo frame. Clients carry it home — a souvenir with a story attached, which is far more valuable than anything from a shop.
Countryside cycling
Flat lanes, rice paddies, water buffalo and small village workshops. An easy ride suitable for most fitness levels, and a natural way to show clients that Hoi An is more than its Ancient Town.
Beyond Hoi An: Hue, My Son and the Hai Van Pass
Hue deserves more than a day trip. We build it around a private Perfume River boat trip to Thien Mu Pagoda and the royal tombs, ending with dinner on board; a cycle through traditional villages and rice paddies; and an evening of Nha Nhac, the Vietnamese court music recognised by UNESCO. A village cooking class gives the Imperial history a domestic counterpoint.
My Son Sanctuary, the Cham temple complex in the hills west of Hoi An, is best visited at opening time, before the heat and the coaches. The Hai Van Pass between Da Nang and Hue is the most scenic transfer in the country — we schedule it by private car with stops, so the journey becomes part of the experience rather than dead time.
Pairing Central Vietnam with the North: seaplane, cruise and sleeper train
Most of our Central Vietnam programmes are part of a longer Vietnam journey. For clients at the luxury end, we often begin in the North with a private seaplane flight over Ha Long Bay (30-minute or one-hour options), followed by a night on a boutique cruise such as Regina Grand or Scarlet Cruise, before flying from Hanoi to Da Nang. Fast Track service at Hanoi and Da Nang airports keeps transfers smooth.
For clients who prefer the romance of the slow route, the overnight sleeper train from Hanoi to Da Nang, in an air-conditioned four-berth compartment, is a memorable alternative to the flight. Seaplane and private cruise pricing is quoted per departure; see our luxury services for details.
What your clients will actually remember
After ten years of designing Indochina trips for European travellers, we have learned that clients rarely come home talking about the monuments. They talk about people and moments. In Central Vietnam, these are the things we hear most:
- The farmer’s hands in Tra Que — showing them how to tell basil from perilla by smell alone, then laughing at their first attempt at folding a spring roll.
- The silence on the basket boat — the moment the guide stops paddling and the only sound is the water coconut leaves moving.
- A free afternoon that turned into a story — a tailor who invited them for tea, a café owner who drew them a map to his favourite noodle stall.
- Lanterns from the water — releasing a paper lantern on the Thu Bon River at dusk, with the Ancient Town glowing behind them.
- The guide who knew the dynasty and the gossip — in Hue, the storyteller who turned emperors into people with tempers, rivalries and favourite poems.
- Not being rushed — this one comes up again and again. Clients notice when nobody is hurrying them, and they remember the company that made it possible.
That last point is why our itineraries look lighter on paper than some competitors’. It is a deliberate choice, and for the boutique agencies we work with, it is the product.
Indicative budget for Central Vietnam
As a rough guide for positioning, the main cost driver is accommodation level and how many private services are included. Every Jem Travel proposal is fully costed for your dates and group size, with clear inclusions and exclusions, so you know exactly what you are reselling.
- Boutique 4-star: riverside hotels in Hoi An, garden properties in Hue, private guide and car throughout.
- Luxury 5-star: La Siesta or Royal Hoi An, Pilgrimage Village in Hue, private Perfume River dinner cruise, Fast Track and, when combined with the North, the Ha Long seaplane.
- Character mix: a 4- or 5-star base with one or two homestay nights for clients who want closer contact with local life.
For agents: we handle all ground logistics in Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos — hotels, private guides, transport, experiences and on-trip changes — with 24/7 support and a post-tour feedback report sent to you. Your clients arrive; we take care of the rest.
Frequently asked questions
How many nights should clients spend in Hoi An?
Jem Travel recommends three to four nights in Hoi An, plus two to three nights in Hue. This allows one main experience per day and free afternoons, which is the pace boutique travellers enjoy most.
Which hotels does Jem Travel use for Hoi An boutique luxury travel?
At 5-star level, La Siesta, Bel Marina and Royal Hoi An; at 4-star boutique level, Shining Riverside and Emerald Riverside. Indicative rates run from about USD 75 to 300 per room per night, depending on level and season.
Can Central Vietnam be combined with a Ha Long Bay seaplane flight?
Yes. Jem Travel regularly starts luxury itineraries in Hanoi with a 30-minute or one-hour private seaplane flight over Ha Long Bay and a boutique cruise, then continues by flight or overnight sleeper train to Da Nang for Hoi An and Hue.
